Puerta del Sol is one of the best known and busiest places in Madrid. The famous clock whose pealing bells (broadcast live on TV) mark the beginning of Spain’s new year is situated here. Under the square lies a public transport hub served by lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Madrid Metro. The new station connects Puerta del Sol to Madrid's commuter rail system and, by extension, to Spain's railroads via direct connections to Atocha and Chamartín railway stations.
